September 7, 2007 Farewell Pavarotti

I was very sad to hear about the death of Lucciano Pavarotti yesterday. Here in the UK most classical stations changed their lineup and his death was almost as big as Princess Diana. I was first introduced to Pavarotti, and to the world of opera when I was given a CD of the 3 Tenors 1990 World Cup performance, which transformed the opera world and brought in an enormous younger audience. That CD made me more interested in opera, and although I was already interested in classical music it was very impacting on my life. I never thought I'd be studying voice though! :) Pavarotti's voice was simply amazing, and I've never heard a man's voice that I liked better than his. He just had a sort of energy, and his voice was so clear and beautiful sounding. I respect the work that he did outside of opera as well, promoting peace in his time, and the way that he made his family a priority despite all that. If you've never heard him sing I can recommend some excellent pieces of his.

Today we're going down to London to see a Walker Evans exhibit. Evans was a large format photographer who photographed rural life in America in 1935-1936. He's quite famous. Anyway I couldn't pass up the chance to see his work in real life, at real size (they're enormous) as opposed to simply in a book or just hearing about it. That's one benefit to living here- London draws incredible exhibits and things that I'd never be able to see without travelling a long way at home.

PR for Nelly if you would- she's been a bit under the weather, and I think she has a cat cold. If she isn't better by Monday I'll take her to the vet.

The garden is coming along well- I've planted lots of cyclamen, and now I'm actually mulching it bit by bit. It looks way way better already. I forgot to take a picture before I left this morning but I'll work on it. :)

Tomorrow is our first auction! We've never been to one, and there's one in Willingham tomorrow morning. Very interesting. I don't know if we'll actually by anything but the experience should be interesting.
