June 24, 2008

I wrote this but couldn't post it on Tuesday.

Today was our last day of iBASE, the group we've been leading for international au pairs and language students here in Cambridge, at STAG specifically. The people whose flat we've been using went away on holiday, and forgot to leave the second lock unlocked for us, so we were locked out. We had been planning to eat our dinner there, but instead we ate on their doorstep while we waited for the iBASE people to come. Of course we didn't have any silverware so we had to improvise. :) I used the lid from the salad dressing that came in my salad as a spoon, and G used his knife to cut a cup in half to use as a spoon. But for the yogurt I had to cut a spoon from the plastic that the salad came in. It was really fun. :)

My self cut yogurt spoon. Brits are anti knives, but they sure do come in handy when strange occurrences seem to befall you regularly. :)

George's cup spoon modification.

Us enjoying our doorstep picnic lunch. :)

We had an interesting happening today as well- a fishmonger came around and offered to sell us some fish! This is the truck he drove:

Looks pretty normal. :) Anyway they come around every 2-3 months, and last time I just said no I wasn't interested, but when I noticed that many of the neighbors were out looking at fish, I decided to do it. I don't generally like fish, but this seemed like a good chance to experience village life. So he had a little metal basket like you'd have at the grocery store, and he went from door to door asking if people would like to buy fish. He had at least 7 kinds of fish, including kippers, halibut, cod, salmon, and 3 others I'd never heard of. Our landlady said she likes kippers for breakfast, so we got some to try that. Such an interesting system- I wish someone would come round with vegetables, I'd so buy them!

We'll let you know how the kippers turn out. :)
