Wow, everyday here feels like a week long. You Focus people know what I mean- it's like that on a Focus trip too, where your 6 week summer trip feels like a year of your life long, in a good way.
Today started out with us driving out to check out some cars at a used car dealer in Bluntisham, about 20 minutes away from here. Mind you, 20 minutes can feel like hours too when you're driving through rural villages and back roads, navigating around roundabouts and desperately looking for that little white arrow that tells you which village you're moving toward. We drove out, saw 2 fairly nice older cars in our price range, took them for a drive, and decided that neither of them was really as good as our current Megane. Although I was so thrilled with the polite salesman and nice dealership! So the test drives were the tipping point- why buy a car the same age that we don't like as well, for the same cost it would take to repair ours? If we do some of the work ourselves? We've pretty much committed to fixing Megan. Megan now has a new battery, and we'll be picking her up today.
I found a car parts and supplies place here courtesy of G's friend from work. We bought a repair manual for our car, but they didn't have any head gasket repair kits. Which was fine, since there's a company in the US that sells the best kit there is- I just ordered one and had it sent to our new address. It should come in about a week. Until then radiator and oil checks everytime before we drive the car. So long as we put in fluid the car runs fine once it's started, so we're going to eek her along (being careful not to overheat) until the kit arrives. We also got another quote from a place in Swavesey, our new home, which was significantly less for brake repairs than the dealer. Big surprise there. :) I think we'll have them do the brakes. The key is still a problem....until we get it fixed or can figure out a hack we'll be taking the key batteries out after we're done driving and putting them back in so that we can turn off the immobiliser (it's like an alarm system). Fun stuff. They're like watch batteries. :)
We signed the 21 page lease today- you wouldn't believe how much information is in that thing. And we paid the deposit, so tonight we're going to pick up the keys. If the guys is totally moved out and he's cleaned the place we can take our stuff out as well. We can't sleep there until Saturday as that's the lease start date. But we'd like to get everything moved in tomorrow, and pick up Nelly Saturday morning and spend the day with her investigating her new home and assuring her that everything will soon be back to normal.
The previous tenant is selling us his furniture, which includes a fridge. It seems funny that I'll actually be owning a refrigerator- I've never owned one before! And a washer! And we'll have a kitchen table that seats 6 people! We're truly thankful.
Our place has a nice big spare bedroom- if you're reading this that means you must be a friend of ours (this isn't a public blog) and that means you're welcome to come visit! If you fly into London we'll take care of the rest- we'll feed you and house you and drive you around. You won't get a better chance to see England!
