August 26, 2007 Cottage life

We've had lots of interesting things going on here in Swavesey. But one of those things is NOT that we have a phone and internet now. :)

It has finally stopped raining here. It rained for just about 2 weeks nonstop, which isn't that bad compared to Michigan's endless months of grey cloudy skies from November until March. :) A British person actually apologized to us for the bad weather!

Nelly hasn't been climbing the garden wall recently, but she has taken to trying to catch these green catydid type bugs that come in the windows. Too bad she won't try to catch flies. But she hasn't caught any yet.

We've moved on from painting the living room and the stairway to doing test strips for the spare room, hallway, bathroom, and our bedroom. The lighting is very different in our cottage at different times of the day, and for a photo person lighting is critical in choosing a color, so I go around at various times looking at the different colors. We have also put in daylight bulbs around the house, which is happier for me for sure since the daylight simulation gives a more true color rendering.

We had dinner with some new friends from chrch Thursday, which started out as a bit of an adventure when we realized we didn't have her address, or phone number (we thought it was in an email and it wasn't) and I knew she didn't have our loaner cell phone number either. But we called someone who it turns out had her address, so that was all good. We really enjoyed talking to people, and just hanging out. One of the couples there lived in Laguna Beach CA for 7 years, so we had a blast talking to them. :) They were in shock that we actually tried Marmite. Marmite (like Vegimite) is this thick brown pasty stuff that you put on toast or other things, and honestly I don't like the flavor of it, but I think I could learn to like it if I had to. Vegemite always reminds me of that TV show....you know the one, "Moving on up, to the east side, got a deluxe apartment in the sky....moving on up, to the east side, we finally got a piece of the pie..." Good Times! That's the name of the show. Duh. :)

This week I spent 2 hours one day in Tesco. 2 whole hours, wandering around trying desperately to find what I needed. You know, it's difficult to find stuff in Tesco. :) I felt a lot better after one of our new friends, Dave, mentioned that he had the same problem, and I guess everyone here does. Misery loves company you know. :) The hardest thing to find, believe it or not, was flour! And sugar! Why? Well there's no aisle labeled Baking Goods. You'd think there would be, but there isn't. It turns out, I discovered after going up and down every single row twice (you can never tell if you just overlooked it) it's on the back wall!!!! Argh.......

After my Tesco adventure I decided to stop by this place I've never been (bad idea) in Willingham, which is 2 villages over and is about 3 times as big as Swavesey. Which isn't saying much. I think they might have 6,000 people there. Anyway G's coworker (one of 3 women working for XS) told me about this cute little shop that sells craft stuff. I've been looking for a place which would sell cross stitch stuff and sewing stuff in general. This place is called Rainbow Crafts, and I did manage to find it, after I first chose the wrong direction 3 times at a four way interchange. :) She had told me it was near the village Green, and I managed to follow the signs for The Green as they call it and eventually found it. Of course all of those roads were one way and it was raining when I left so I had a difficult time getting back out. I also stopped at a Farm Shop- there are tons of those around the villages since farming is one of the predominant occupations of the people living in the villages. This farm shop is large and fairly well known, and guess what sort of pet I found for sale there? Not degus. Not snails. ;) Not fish, or gerbils or hamsters. You'll never guess so I might as well tell you: Chipmunks! That's right- chipmunks, just like we all see running around outside. They even have albino ones! There's no way Nelly will not eat a chipmunk if we had it as a pet, so G said no to that one. But I really wanted one. I tried to convince G that Nelly would get along with a big fat rabbit, since it would be her size and could defend itself, but he just isn't convinced yet. Until then, I'll just have to keep tending the snails. :)

I'm posting some new pictures in the next blog. We're having good weather now so you'll notice lots of flowers and things looking green. :)
